UML, with a bit of design…

Lately I have been very curious with design specially when it comes the improvement in the engineering field, and how this now could be helpful soon. The reason I am writing about is why recently I have been reading about design, and yes, this have to do with art, but also with science and engineering, actually there should be a field when I could apply all of this, and yes, indeed there is.

I’ll start with Neri Oxman, she is a Design architect, and am not sure if she is specialized in those fields, let’s pretend that she does. The point I am trying to show in here is that nowadays she work at the media lab at the MIT, yes you could google it for more info or could watch the second episode of the documentary series on Netflix called the art of design, I really recommend it.

You should be wondering what the media lab is, well it is a space in the MIT where these four field that once Da Vinci work on and was very applauded for it. Science, engineering, design and art, this is the medium where you could think anything weird and you are free to do it and not judge about it, as long it could be solution for any problem, but not a current problem, a solution where the problem have not been created or even known of its existence.

The purpose of these is to think ahead in the future and it may have seemed easy to bring a solution where the problem has not even been there. And you may wonder, what does this have to do with UML, well it is the edge where engineering and design encounters, and even art if you get too philosophical about it.

UML stands for Unified Modeling Language; therefore, this help us to map any systems you need to prove or explain. Used mainly in software can be used to document, manage, specify, visualize or craft a system.

There are two types of UML diagrams:

• Structural
• Behavior

The parts that conform any UML diagram are:

• Tables or entities that represent object on many cases that can hold methods and variables that represent the attributes for the entity.
  • Methods
  • Attributes
• Relationships, these are the connections, that can describe the positions or behavior of any aspects between entities.
